Review :

Nicol Williamson as a vigorous Irish businessman in a British company

"The Reckoning" is a character study. Nicol Williamson has plenty of acting chops to fill out the role, and that he does. He has good support from 3 different actresses whom he beds: his wife, his secretary and a receptionist that he meets in his home town of Liverpool.

Williamson plays a man with a powerful personality, a shrewd businessman, a scrapper, and a high sex drive. He gives free rein to his emotions. He can tear up at his father's death, turn violent at his father's killer, and become angry at his boss and the stiff British environment in which he works. He has plenty of energy and plenty of ambition. He is forthright when it suits him and reticent when that suits him.

But Williamson's Michael Marler is not a happy man or a settled man. As an Irishman in a British company and with a British wife, he is a bit of a fish out of water. His marriage is a roller-coaster.

It seems that the women in his life are also unsettled and searching for something too. Not so his mother and sister whom we meet when his father dies.

Much of his spirit comes out when he drives his car. He brooks no slowpokes or road obstacles. He drives like a madman, one might say.

In the end, what is this story about? The Irish-British frictions are brought out in depth as they are reflected in every facet of Marler's life. The story is about that and about a man trying to be a man in a world that seems altogether too civilized for what is inside a man and a woman. There needs be room for passion and plenty of it. Song and poetry too, which were his father's specialties.

Whether it's his driving, his encounters with women, his business dealings, his frictions with British snobbery, or his revenge. we have a man with strong passions attempting to live under civilized constraints. This is also what this picture is about.

See it if you enjoy, as I do, fine British actors, of whom Williamson stood in the top tier of his generation.
