This year, however, he is afflicted with an infirmity that renders him unable to use his sword. Rather than give up this important commission and let the martial world know of his precarious health he means to entrust the consignment to two young knights in his manor, Hsiang Ting and Yun Piao-Piao. As it happens, these two are also betrothed; clearly they have their swordsmanship in common. At Peerless Manor, everyone is suspicious of malevolent strangers who may be sniffing around the silver transport. So when Le I appears astride a high-quality charger but otherwise clearly down on his luck, Hsiang Ting thinks Le I may be a spy for the bad guys in the Flying Tiger Manor. It doesn't help that Le I and Yun Piao-Piao hit it off right away. Even or especially when Le I saves Yun Piao-Piao from a Flying Tiger thug, Hsiang is not assuaged. Yun ...

Good stuff

Highly entertaining swordplay picture from Chang Cheh, scripted by I Kuang. David Chiang and Ti Lung are both well-cast. For once, the love story part even adds something -- stay tuned for one of the best oh-so-THAT'S-what-you-two-are-up-to flashes ever committed to film. Great action repays a couple of viewings.

Tepid Lolita Reboot

Sexy schoolgirl Susan George hops off her bicycle and jumps into bed with muscular Charles Bronson, the older author of the erotic literature she's been reading. And, to quote of his books, "Their bodies fused in a tangle of heat…" Like reading, you have to imagine those scenes, though... Well, the couple have problems. For one thing, she can't cook. But, more importantly, she's sixteen and he's thirty-eight. Since this constitutes statutory rape, they have a problem. Will these crazy London lovebirds work it out?

The co-starring couple are a serious mismatch; mostly due to Mr. Bronson's performing style, they are never believable as a couple. Consequently, Ms. George's attempt to throw out a Lauren Bacall line - "If you want me, just whistle" - simply bounces off Bronson; on Humphrey Bogart, it stuck. Otherwise, this isn't one of the worst films ever made. John Scott and Jim Dale give it a breezy "Georgy Girl"-like soundtrack, the supporting cast works, and George looks thoroughly sexy riding her bike in those mini-skirts.

" I figured there was only going to be one funeral, Catholic! "

When the French army took control of the country we call Mexico, they counted on one factor to help them subdue the population, . . . fear! The use of Fear, through, intimation, torture, and outright execution worked, but not in the way they thought it would. The French brutality had an effect alright, it had the disastrous consequence of cementing the people, their friends and hundreds of mercenaries into an avenging force. Although there are many stories of the revolution, several stand out as movie classics. The Professionals, is one favorite, another is, "Two Mules for Sister Sara." In this story we have an American mercenary (Clint Eastwood) named Hogan who has bitter memories of the Civil War and decides to try for a quick Gold fortune in Mexico. He agrees to help Mexican Col. Beltran (Manuel Fabregas) take the French Garrison in exchange for half the treasury. Along the way, Hogan is joined by a traveling Catholic Nun, named Sister Sara (Shirley MacLaine) who has more secrets than just fear of being captured by the French. Innicially captured by three whiskey drinking rouges who strip, humiliate and threaten the beautiful Nun, she becomes a surprising and necessary ally. In their wondering, they save each other's life until the end, when Hogan is completely shocked with Sister Sara as she reveals her most guarded secret. I loved the movie, especially it's memorable and haunting theme at the beginning of the film. Superb! ****

Jeff is nowhere to be seen.

Many people at the time thought that Delon played "Jeff" (the posters were deceptive);he actually plays Laurent ,a young gangster who, after a holdup,is searching for his boss who has left the gang and of course has taken all the dough. The runaway's lover,Eva accompanies him.

This is a moderately entertaining detective film.It was not the first time Delon had worked with Jean Herman. The previous year, they had made a better thriller "Adieu L'Ami" also starring Charles Bronson. Here,Delon played opposite Mireille Darc who was his girlfriend at the time .But the best is once again,François de Roubaix's tuneful delicate score.

SOME GIRLS DO (Ralph Thomas, 1969) **1/2

Campier, less successful sequel to DEADLIER THAN THE MALE (1967) – basically the only department where this surpasses the original is in the title track! Incidentally, it makes no attempt to be a direct continuation of the earlier film – with, for instance, the figures of the boss and his secretary nowhere to be seen: in fact, here Bulldog Drummond (a returning but not-as-effective Richard Johnson) seems to have gone up in the world as he now has a female assistant of his own and, when we first see him, he is sun-bathing (and ditching a host of Hungarian girls!?) in the company of a debuting Sydne Rome.

The latter's amiably klutzy character recalls those played by Stella Stevens and Sharon Tate in the first and fourth entries in the comparable and contemporaneous "Matt Helm" series with Dean Martin. Indeed, the whole film seems to be closer to the spoofy spirit of that franchise (attributable perhaps to the fact that Hammer's Jimmy Sangster did not collaborate to the script this time around) – which, unlike the Drummond duo, had copied the gadget-craze that were a fixture of the prototypical James Bond extravaganzas.

More illogically, not only does the supposedly-dead arch-criminal Carl Peterson turn up again here (albeit played by a different, younger actor i.e. James Villiers) but the two do not even recognize one another immediately (besides, Peterson had merely dual identities in the first film whereas he has three here and is a master of disguise besides!). That said, it does attempt to duplicate elements that had worked first time out, namely Peterson's two principal hench-girls working as a team, except that Daliah Lavi (who had appeared in the first and best Matt Helm adventure THE SILENCERS 1966) and Beba Loncar are not nearly as intriguing as Elke Sommer and Sylva Koscina and, what is more, there is little chemistry between them!

Perhaps realizing this, the script singled out not one but two other girls to share the spotlight with them (by the way, most of Peterson's girls are actually robots – which raises uncomfortable parallels to Mario Bava's dispiriting DR. GOLDFOOT AND THE GIRL BOMB {1966]): one is Yutte Stensgard (soon to take the leading role in Hammer's maligned – and Sangster-directed – LUST FOR A VAMPIRE 1971) and Vanessa Howard (who more or less duplicates the Suzanna Leigh role from the first film, in that she improbably hitches up with the hero at the finale)…with Rome (who proves no nitwit but rather a triple agent!) going all of a sudden for Drummond's comic-relief partner (describing his car as "positively psychedelic" and eliciting a "Cool, baby!" response from Drummond at a party!). By the way, Robert Morley also puts in an irrelevant cameo as a flamboyant cooking instructing named "Miss Mary" (complete with golden earring)!

The 'McGuffin' in this case is a supersonic plane, whose infra-sound is capable of killing but also accelerates the movement of, say, a speed-boat during a race – big deal! Drummond, in fact, is made to fly one but subsequently has to bail out (after an attack by another aircraft!) – only to find the rip-cord of his parachute had also been pulled beforehand! As for the climax, in spite of all the ongoing action at the villain's fortress (which again includes a couple of non-entities for male underlings), Peterson's come-uppance is down to that infallible – and completely baffling – in-built self-destructing switch in his unwieldy controlling device!

One of the all-time-good-to-see-again-and-again films

One of my all-time favorites. Everything is in it: a very good story where everything matches, the best of comedy actors of that time (French and international), the music which is typical for the swinging sixties (The American Breed). Unfortunately, there was never a second film as far as I know, although the end of the first film would have been a good start for a follow-up film.

Arrange To See, The Arrangement

Just resaw this movie after 36 years. All I could remember from the first time I saw this film at age 11 was the car crash. Anyhow, outstanding acting by all involved. However, the movie is stolen by the powerful and emotional performance of Faye Dunaway. Miss Dunaway is stunning, both physically and emotionally. She grits her teeth and gives one of her most intense and raw performances. The film however, has a sad and depressing flip to it; the American Dream turned into a nightmare. Made in the last 1960s, to most young viewers this Elia Kazan masterpiece probably seems a weird and strange ride. However, for children of the 60s, this movie captures the "Nature of the Beast" which was 1969.

The Arrangement is outstanding.

"Me name ain't 'ermann

Enzo Castellari strikes again with a distinctly sixties flavoured war film starring Luigi Pistilli, Francisco Rabal, and some guy named Van Johnston. You know what to expect from our Enzo, right? Loads of action, flashy camera-work, no boring parts, and everything is alright with the world.

This time, instead of the Americans heading through enemy territory in Inglorious B*stards, we've got Gerry taking the fight to Blighty. The Germans use the Dunkirk evacuations to sneak some troops into England, in order to destroy the British Army's radar equipment, led by Luigi Pistilli and Franciso Rabal, who, in disguise, quickly makes friend with dashing Hungarian (?) officer Van Johnston. Van's no fool, though

  • he knows something's amiss as he's just found a pile of dead British

soldiers with their ID missing.

The Germans are all jacked up after gaining France and now preparing to invade Britain (this is all leading up to the Battle of Britain), and as Van is trying to be taken seriously with his spy theory (you'd think they would have taken it seriously, but we're talking Italian movies here so just let it slide), the German spies are conspiring together to hit the radar stations, with their big prize in sight: The radar command centre. Can Van, some Air Marshall guy, his cockney sidekick who says 'arse' a lot, and some French pilots stop them in time? Although tame by later Enzo films (Bronx Warriors, The Big Racket etc), in this particular film he seems to have a very large budget to work with. Check out the scenes in Dunkirk! There's plenty of action here, from dogfights to gun battles between the British and Germans (the number of which who have actually sneaked into the UK is kept vague, which makes sense in respect to the action). Some stock footage, clever model work, and our Enzo goes berserk with the split screen, as well as filming scenes from the most unusual angles. Po-faced military fact people will have an aneurysm upon viewing this film, but who cares about that? I just want to be entertained after a hard day's work. Both Pistilli (The Devil's Obsession) and Francisco Rabal (Nightmare City) hold their own here. Van Johnston's a bit stiff though. Good old Enzo hasn't let me down yet.

Doing A Favor For An Ally

Topaz was the third from the last of the great Alfred Hitchcock's films and in those last few films Hitch eschewed using big American box office names. No doubt he'd come to the conclusion that his was the biggest box office name on the credits.

But if the leading and many of the supporting players were not known to American audiences they were certainly known to French audiences. Dany Robin, Frederick Stafford, Phillippe Noiret, Michel Subor, Michel Piccoli all have had substantial careers in the French cinema.

Topaz is certainly an international thriller with the action going from Copenhagen, to Harlem, to Cuba, and finally Paris. Only Cuba was not shot on actual location for obvious reasons.

The film is based on a spy novel surrounding the Cuban Missile Crisis. A Russian defector whose defection with his family is very nicely shot in Copenhagen hints at some major problems coming our way in the Pearl of the Antillies. Our biggest problem though is that because of the ill-fated Bay of Pigs invasion, we've got no real intelligence on the ground in Cuba. What to do?

Well if you're John Forsythe there's been a reason you've been cultivating the French for years. He goes to Frederick Stafford of French intelligence and asks him to find out what's happening in Cuba.

History in 1962 bares witness to what was happening in Cuba at that time, but also Stafford is concerned the Russians have a spy real high up in the French government, code name, Topaz.

There's a romantic angle here to, so very French. Stafford makes use of his mistress, a Cuban girl played by Karin Dor who wife Dany Robin has reasons to be suspicious of. Then again she's not sitting home waiting for the grass to grow under her feet. She's having a fling with Michel Piccoli who is a friend of her husband.

International Geopolitics and romantic affairs are all tied together in this novel which Hitchcock serves up with his usual touch.

What a sad end both the leads in this film had. Frederick Stafford was killed in a plane crash in 1979 and Dany Robin and her husband died in an apartment house fire in 1995. Truly a cursed film.

Besides those mentioned look for good performances by John Vernon as a Castro aide and wannabe and from Roscoe Lee Browne who's an operator for French Intelligence in Harlem. I kid you not.

It's not one of Alfred Hitchcock's best films, but Topaz is entertaining enough and Hitchcock fans won't be disappointed.

European cult cinema cannot be better than this!

I watched this movie when I was a kid. I've been in love with it ever since, and today I find it even better for each time I view it.

This is a personal favorite, and I rate it higher than any other adventure movie I've seen. Steve Hawkes is the best and coolest Tarzan ever, Kitty Swan the best jungle queen, Marcello Giombini the best composer (how I wish I could come across the original soundtrack of this one) and Manuel Caño is my favorite Spanish director.

When I was a kid - I liked this one a whole lot more than other more classic Tarzan-movies, and my opinion today is the same (only stronger).

Whatever people might say about authorized or unauthorized Tarzans - Steve Hawkes will alway be the #1 Tarzan to me, and this one is without a doubt the very best of his two Tarzan-movies.

If anyone has the Spanish or Portuguese version and wants to sell it to me. Please drop me an e-mail (andreas@brus-online.com). I "only" have the Swedish, Greek and Norwegian prints.

Poetically visual original romance...

After having watched two movies, both belonging to the the eastern European category, without feeling to comment on either,I tried this one.I honestly got blown away by the movie. It is a romance, but avoids all the clichés this genre has ever created, down to this day. This one has stood the cruel test of time, and will cruise for times to come. The rustic setting,country-life,amazing cinematography, the music and the performances make this movie an unforgettable one.The setting is almost magical with never-end fields of grain, swaying in the wind, and shot in the most poetic way.The rural life, the horses add to the magic the setting creates. The drama, however,in this magical setting is as real as it can be,which is why the movie is seriously timeless. The nostalgia this film evokes is indescribable. However,as already said, nothing in this film is clichéd. It is highly recommenced to anyone looking for an original romance, and specially recommended to any cinephile.

The life story of Argentine independence hero Jose de San Martin.

Watch The Knight of the Sword Trailer :

Review :

Highly recommended, but only for those who know the history.

This is the story of the great South American hero, General Don Jose de San Martin, one of the three great liberators of the American Colonies from the European empires, next to Washington and Bolivar. The storyline covers near a decade of his life; from the arrival of San Martin to Buenos Aires after his military training in Europe, going through all his historical battles (San Lorenzo, Maipú, Chacabuco), and ends when he encounters General Bolivar, after liberating North Argentina, Chile, and South Peru from the Spanish forces. Almost every historic event is shown, including the crossing of the Andes Mountains -by far the best representation of the whole movie-. This approach of showing everything, causes the movie to be too brief on each event, and explain little or nothing about the causes and motivations of each and every step of San Martin's feat. So, it's essential to have a previous knowledge of this frame of the American history if you intend to understand the film. Otherwise, you'll get dizzied by the somewhat clumsy series of battles and arrivals-at-conquered-cities.

El Santo de la Espada is made by Argentines, and undoubtedly intended for an Argentine public, and the hero is always preceding the man. A more sensitive side of San Martin's personality is also exercised in the various scenes where he is alone with his wife, though this is only half achieved. Some little trivia here: The director's cut originally portrayed San Martin crying while watching soldiers die in one of the battles, but this scene was deleted after censoring from the dictatorial military government of the time, which wouldn't allow any sign of weakness in Argentina's #1 national hero.

Overall, the movie is very well done having in mind the techy limitations of the time where it was done, and specifically, the limitations on Argentine's cinematography. The performances are acceptable in general, and Alfredo Alcon's is definitely outstanding: he will make you firmly believe that he is the San Martin you've studied about in school.

Review :

An under-regarded social drama

I went to a viewing of this in Brighton, UK at which the director, Barney Platts-Mills, and one actor, Roy Haywood, was present. tidbits regarding the film: it cost £18k (at 1969 prices) under budget of £20k.

All the actors were untrained and this was their first piece of acting.

Some of the actors were tearaway kids who engaged in theft in real life. They stole filming equipment from the set not realising its value, and that by doing so they threatened the films production.

Martin Scorsese has a 16mm print of the film in his private collection and regards it highly. The original negative was nearly thrown away when the film company went bankrupt but it was recovered from a rubbish pile by an attentive employee.

The director said that he preferred untrained actors to trained ones because they didn't ad-lib or interpret their roles: they played it straight from the script and that this was the reason for the extreme minimalism of the performances. For them it wasn't an exciting filmic opportunity it was, Roy Haywood said, "just a job - not exciting - just a way to earn money". The director said that that made their performances special.

Platts-Mills said that the main theme of the film, which most critics missed, was "why shouldn't a 15 year old girl sleep with those who she wishes to?"

-----

The film's title "Bronco Bullfrog" refers to the thief who escaped from borstal and had to make his way in the world whilst on the run by engaging in theft. He does not play the major role in the film however. That goes to Del and Anne a young couple who meet in the deprived environment of Stratford in East London where there is little for kids to do and where they have no money. Their relationship strengthens and they attempt to escape their limiting environment by running away to the coast.

The films has its comic moments often driven by the utterly spartan & anorexic dialog. Conversations that would occupy tens of minutes of naff method-overacting in a Hollywood film are dispatched in two or three words: for example when the couple meet for the first time and agree to date the entire conversation is: "Del:do you want to go out? Anne:Yea, OK".

These are kids who are adrift and going nowhere. The plot is an engaging slice into their life and a unique fusion of drama and social documentary: unlike anything else made.
