'Odd couple' relationship, funny and touching

In 'Swinging Sixties' London a young woman tries to find herself by indulging in affairs which inevitably end in disaster - and childbirth. After several failed relationships, each of which adds to the population, she realises that there is one man who has always stood by her and loved her through thick and thin - her father's old manservant Savage (Harry Andrews).

It's a great 'odd couple' relationship and a real change of pace for Andrews who for once is not required to play the square-jawed hero. It's a funny and touching movie, now rather dated, but it stands up nicely as an artifact of its time; all those sophisticated settings and exotic foreign locations are eventually seen as empty and irrelevant when set against the values of home and The Love Of A Good Man.

If only real life was that simple!

Their Finest Hour

This has some of the best aerial fight scenes ever - 'Top Gun' nothwithstanding. If it has faults it is that it can sometimes be a bit dull as it is very historically accurate, as it was a very well documented battle and presumably because when it was made many of the participants were still alive (and some still are).

It might have been better if like the 'Dam Busters' it had adopted a rather more documentary style, rather than having ground based ficticious sub-plots.

There are no particular stars (save the aircraft) but many cameos and it is even handed to the Germans as well, who lost many brave men.

The bits I liked were, as one other has commented, British diplomat Ralph Richardson telling German Curt Jurgens (over tea of course) that we wouldn't be dictated to and the scene in the RAF command bunker as one of the biggest daily air battles develops, where Churchill (suggested only by a puffing cigar but very much a hands on war leader), on surveying the plotting board showing hundreds of attacking German aircraft, orders more reserves into the battle only to be told there are none left, everything we had was in the air or on the ground being refuelled.

If the technology looks dated now, we must not forget that at the time radar was ultra secret and definitely cutting edge - this was the start of electronic warfare.

I believe I am correct in saying the film opened on 15th September 1969, celebrated in the UK as Battle of Britain day and the actual anniversary of the Churchill incident above.

This was truly the finest hour of those young pilots and we did it all without American help or even a Yank guest star..........

Watch It Takes All Kinds Trailer :

Review :

Perfectly ordinary. That's quite a feat.

I know it's hard to believe, but I saw "It Takes All Kinds" at an actual SCREENING - in 2001! I suspect that Screensound (Australia's national film archive) dusted off a randomly chosen obscure title of slight historical interest, a rare foreign production made on Australian soil in the 1960s, starring Vera Miles - and if the faded El Cheapocolour print was in remarkably good condition, that's probably because it hadn't been removed from its canister in over thirty years.

I think it's at best misleading to describe a film as having "dated", unless you mean simply that the quality of the print has decayed. (Ditto novels, plays, and works of music. Arguably, paintings and sculptures DO become dated, as the paint cracks and the surface wears away. But movies - movies themselves, as opposed to prints - do not change with time, and hence cannot become better or worse.) What happens when a movie becomes "dated" is analogous to what happens when a forgery becomes more obviously a forgery. Consider the Cottingly fairy photographs. Even people who are utterly insensitive to the most obvious signs of photographic trickery would not be fooled by these forgeries today - because the fairies look, for all the world, like DRAWINGS of fairies. They always did. But when the transient artistic conventions of the Edwardian era were ubiquitous and unquestioned, nobody realised this. Nobody could tell which aspects of Edwardian drawing made objective sense and which were merely modish. (But Edwardians could easily distinguish genuine value from contemporary zing in the drawings of a hundred years earlier, and if you could smuggle art back through time, they'd probably be BETTER judges of the drawings of today than we ourselves are.)

When movies "date", it's because the unquestioned conventions on which they rely cease to become intuitively obvious - which means that the TRUE value of the movie becomes more obvious. If there's nothing there but fashionable correctness, we'll be able to tell; if there's something other than fashionable correctness, it will become easier to see what it is.

"It Takes All Kinds" is JUST fashionable correctness. It's the most purely mediocre movie from outside my viewing lifetime I have ever seen. It might be the most mediocre such movie I will ever see. The pacing, the choice of camera angles, and the hammy staging of contrived fight sequences, etc. are, I'm sure, correct by the standards of their day; they're also ABSOLUTELY uninspired. The acting is everything a 1969 viewer would have expected and NOTHING else. Did I say this was a work of "slight" historical interest? In its very banality, it's priceless.

Dissapointing for a fan of the series

I gave this a 6, cinemawise. For those of you who saw the series, it was a 3 or 4. I got 12 episodes of later years from Canada. The earlier years were a scream on the BBC, but then I was younger. This movie had little of its zip.

His only friends are a toy maker name Shinpei Inami and a little girl named Sachicko. The only other kids that are around is a gang of kids led by a bully named Gabara. To escape his loneliness, Ichiro imagines that he is on Monster Island where he befriends Minya, the son of Godzilla. It is through his daydreams that he watches Godzilla and Minya fight other monsters, including one also named Gabara who is just as bad a bully as the one that is tormenting Ichiro. It is through these daydreams that he learns that it is okay to fight back and face his fears. These lessons also help him to outwit a couple of bumbling bank robbers as well as finally have the guts to stand up to Gabara and his gang.

Not Much Of A Movie

Tenth Godzilla film is also the worst, an incredibly weak, pointless affair about a bullied Japanese boy who daydreams about hanging out on Monster Island with the son of Godzilla, where they try to help each other overcome their respective bullies...Godzilla does what he can to help. Shamelessly uses loads of flashback footage from previous films in a flimsy and desperate attempt to pass this off as a new story. Subplot with the fleeing crooks is silly and contrived. Film seems confused as to whether or not Godzilla really exists, or is just a movie character, which is bizarre. Worthy message about dealing with bullies is lost by the misguided ending with that poor sign painter!

One of the best films from the entire '60s

A small masterpiece, almost unknown because it was Petrlic's first and only film he ever did before he went on teaching and writing about Cinema in Zagreb as a professor. I've watched this film the other night and went completely crazy about it. It's Chabrol, Godard, Bresson, Cassavetes, Lester, Pannebaker - in a quiet, subtle, almost childish situations and resolutions within it, but yet clever, true to life, warm. It's "off-beat" completely - which is strange considering the year of the film (no one in former Yugoslavia did a similar film to this date). It's like a Jarmusch film, but 15 years before Stranger Than Paradise. Two friends are wandering in Zagreb, chasing girls, go to shows, working together, laughing, fighting. Nothing happens really story-wised, but every second something happens between the people in the scene - with the jazz, or piano, or city traffic, or complete silence in the background. Some sort of inner magic just goes from one scene into the other and the ending is hilariously unexpected, human and innocent. Very touching film about young urban people with a loving dose of the old Zagreb's spirit - back in the days that seems much simpler, but it really was completely the same as today or as anywhere else for that matter.

Review :

one of my personal favorites

This is the movie that got me into spaghetti westerns. I have been a huge fan of horror movies ever since I can remember, and I especially love the Euro-horror of the 60's and 70's. I also love horror-westerns like Curse of the Undead, and the infamous "bad" movie Billy the Kid vs. Dracula. There are only 2 or 3 other films that I would consider true horror-westerns, and I like those as well. Naturally, when I found out about this movie, I knew I had to have it.

I don't really think of this movie as a horror-western, since we never really know whether the stranger is supernatural or not, but it is a spaghetti western with a strong Gothic Euro-horror feel to it. This is the closest thing there is to a Euro-horror spaghetti western. It's a shame there was never a full-blown Euro-western horror film with an obvious ghost, vampire, zombies or the like. It could have have been incredible. Especially if Barbara Steele was in it. Anyway, I digress.

I don't consider this movie to be a sequel to the original Django film either. The stranger here is a man named Django, but we know he is not the same Django as the one in Sergio Corbucci's film, because this Django is a former confederate soldier. Corbucci's Django fought for the Union Army. This Django is like the grim reaper, a tall, emotionless, shadowy figure in black who calls himself a "demon from hell," and he is here to take the three officers who betrayed his regiment back down with him. He doesn't just kill, he does it with a macabre sense of style, which we first see in the opening scene of the film, where there is some great camera work as Django strolls into the middle of town, sticks a grave marker cross with the date and his first victim's name on it into the dirt in front of the saloon, and waits for the doomed man to come out and see it. It's an incredible scene, and that's just the beginning of Django's ghastly revenge. There are many more cool scenes after that one, but I won't spoil them.

The music is very creepy and atmospheric. It's an excellent score that could fit right into a Euro-horror movie, yet it is totally appropriate for a spaghetti western as well. There is even a part where it sounds like they are using a theremin. The constant sound of howling wind is also a nice touch.

In addition to the macabre, there is also some classic spaghetti western craziness in this film. Luke Murdoch, the brother of one of Django's targets, is one of the highlights of the movie. He is wildly insane, violent, over-the-top, and very entertaining to watch. There is also a scene near the beginning of the film where two men are playing catch with a lit stick of dynamite, and there is a crowd of people watching them, betting and cheering like it's America's favorite pastime. You've just gotta love this stuff.

There's some bad editing that makes me think that the original Italian version may have been longer, but it's a unique and interesting film in spite of whatever minor flaws it may have.

This was my first spaghetti western, and now I'm hooked on the genre. Need I say more?

A lovely film, deserving to be seen by a new generation.

I saw this movie so many years ago when it was first released with a great deal of fanfare featuring Liza Minnelli's virtuosic portrayal of a heartbreakingly lonely, vulnerable and impossible young coed. Seeing it again, some 30 years later, it continues to resonate with its beautifully drawn characters and their painfully real relationships. Love, desire, passion, confusion, post-adolescent yearnings- -these strong emotions and feelings are present in every scene of this film which has not aged one single bit in those 30 years. This movie is a gem.

Buy The Poster, Forget The Movie

Video stores and companies were charging $150.00 to copy a copy of Naked Angels. They are crazy! I saw this movie when it first came out at the Thunderbird Drive-In in Fort Lauderdale. The movie stunk. I mean there were a few very minor good points: the beautiful and sexy Jennifer Gans(blond, tan and built!), Las Vegas in it's hip-days, and that's about it.

The acting stinks. Mike Green as a leading man is revolting. The guy can't act, he looks like he didn't change his clothes for a month, and he keeps flopping off his motorcycle. Where did they get some of these actors; most look like desert hermits or Vegas homeless.

The one-sheet poster for this film is outstanding. Cheesy looking with neat 60s artwork of a horde of outlaw bikers and a beautiful girl. The poster sells for, you guessed it, $150.00! So, buy the cool poster and forget seeing this turkey.

THE INVINCIBLE FIST – Lo Lieh stars in minor Shaw Bros. swordplay film

THE INVINCIBLE FIST (1969) is a lesser swordplay film from Shaw Bros. director Chang Cheh (ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN, BLOOD BROTHERS, HAVE SWORD WILL TRAVEL, etc.) starring Lo Lieh (FIVE FINGERS OF DEATH) as a sword-wielding bounty hunter, Master Tieh, who goes under the nickname, "Invincible Fist." However, despite the title, there are no fists on display in this film. The action strictly involves swords and such nifty exotic weapons as the Golden Abacus, which shoots out little golden balls, goose-shaped flying stars, and a tube which shoots out a chain with a sharp projectile at the end which embeds itself into a victim enabling a fighter to pull his opponent in close. There are many fight scenes involving multiple combatants, often played out in fields of high reeds (built on Shaw Bros. studio sets) which offer convenient cover to the various parties stalking each other.

The plot is a simple one, involving the efforts of Master Tieh and his band of fighters to apprehend a skilled band of robbers and their numerous henchmen who have struck four times within the past two years, robbing and killing prominent families in the province. Ku Feng (THE MAGIC BLADE) plays one of the four lead robbers, who disguises himself as "Cripple Peng" when not robbing. Chen Sing (SHAOLIN MONK) plays another of the robbers and has one excellent fight scene early on where he wields a metal spear. David Chiang (THE NEW ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN), in an early major role, plays Master Tieh's brother and chief lieutenant and distinguishes himself in many fight scenes also. Future kung fu star Cliff Lok (KUNG FU GENIUS, RING OF DEATH) is visible as one of the bad guys. The robbers ride around in a carriage which holds six-to-eight men, but is pulled by a single poor horse who clearly has a hard time lugging it uphill as it's called on to do here.

There is a subplot in which a wounded Lo Lieh is nursed back to health by the virtuous blind daughter (Li Ching) of the head bandit, played by Fang Mien. This whole sequence might have slowed the film down, but it's thankfully short and comes too late in the proceedings to do any serious damage. A scene between the two men in front of the blind woman foreshadows a very similar scene played out between Danny Lee and Chow Yun Fat in front of a blind Sally Yeh in John Woo's THE KILLER (1989).

Again, this is not one of the great martial arts films from Shaw Bros., coming out at a time when Chang Cheh was putting greater effort into films like GOLDEN SWALLOW, HAVE SWORD WILL TRAVEL and RETURN OF THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN, but it is polished and well-staged and offers plenty of action. Fans of this genre will not be too disappointed.

Acid test

The pot-movie to end them all, "Himmel og helvete" (Heaven and hell) was co-scripted by the director, Øivind Vennerød, who wanted an entertainment, and a Norwegian medical expert, who wanted a stern warning to young people about the evils of drug-use.

The resulting bastard of a script is hilarious. The pot-heads in the audiences went crazy when the film was shown back in 69, and loudly applauded every badly acted line of dialogue. They KNEW what it was like tripping out on illegal substances. The makers of this movie most certainly did not!

"H & H" follows the traditional drug-movie set-up: Young, nice couple are lured into a life of sex, addiction and crime via their first puff on a marijuana-cigarette. They end up - well, if you've read this far you already know.

Every usable and unusable cliche is dragged screaming out from the closet of hoary movie-ideas: Desperate father killing sleazy, foreign drug lord who turned his daughter into dope- fiend; Smooth talking doctor airing his eloquent views on drugs in smoke-filled office; Worldy-wise police-officer ruminating about liberal university-professor advocating drugs in the presence of students; Fat old man making sexual advances on helpless, money-crazed female drug-addict.

Yes, they're all here. In gruesome colour, complete with the worst special-effect ending this side of "Plan 9 from outer space". Apart from that, it's really "Reefer madness" all over again. Only worse.

To film this fight, they did film the two sparring, despite both fighters already being in retirement (Rocky for many more years than Ali)."

That is false. When Muhammad Ali retired, Marciano was already DEAD for years. Marciano died in 1969 at the young age of 45. Marciano and Ali shot the footage in 1968-early 1969. Aside from that, the DVD was a very good one, and I think as years go on, many, many, many boxing fans will be adding this one to their collection. I give this DVD production 5 out of 5.

Review :

It's 1969, and after fleeing to Canada, an emotionally disturbed draft evader teams up with a young hippie (also a draft dodger), and where the duo goes, trouble follows.

The film's shoestring budget is glaringly apparent throughout. Bad sound. Bad lighting. Cheap, washed out film stock. Atrocious direction. Over-the-top acting. Gordon Thomson is painfully wooden as the central character, Alan Evans, who flees to Canada to avoid the draft. Don Stroud provides the film's only believable performance as Richie Kovacs, Evans' fellow draft dodger and hippie sidekick.

Underscoring The Blast's flaws is its syrupy, melodramatic music score, which smacks of the earliest days of soap opera. Criticism aside, the film's most redeeming features are a surprisingly interesting storyline, as well the use of a variety of stunning British Columbia locations.

Love is An Illusion, But a Grand Illusion

I am surprised that nobody has yet pointed out that the ending in the snow is an homage to Jean Renoir's "Grand Illusion." The film is dedicated at the beginning to Renoir.

Jean Renoir was the great humanist director. For him, all that matters is how we treat human beings. The same here for Truffaut. The film tells us that it does not matter if you're rich or poor, male or female, upholding the law or fighting it, the only thing that matters is love. This is a romantic film that has occasional touches of a good mystery/detective/noir film. The Hitchcock film that it most reminded me of was "Marnie". There, like here, it is hard to know if crime or patient love will win out in the end.

I did not care much for the New Wave style editing, which seemed out of sync with the dramatic story at times. The many shots of Belmondo driving kept reminding me of the beginning of "Breathless." The color seemed a bit dull and washed out.

The locations are lovely, but Truffaut seems to have only one thing on his mind, the relationship between the lead characters, Louis and Juli/Marion. The characters and the audience think they know each other, but the film keeps fooling them and us. We are constantly getting new information that makes us re-evaluate who they are and they are constantly surprising each other. For example, Louis has been telling Juli/Marion how much he loves her and how beautiful she is and then suddenly he gets upset and tells her how there are many of her kind - she is not really a woman or a girl, but a "chick". The term "chick" is far more demeaning here then the term "bitch" or "slut" could ever have been. He tells her that her cold attitude actually makes her ugly. Watching the scene, one thinks about how easily and naturally men can degrade women, even women they love.

The film is a bit long and occasionally meanders, but it is emotionally intense at many points along the way. It seems that nothing is happening and then suddenly there's a surprise that makes you think, "Oh my goodness, I didn't expect that." It may not be one of Truffaut's best films, but second-rate Truffaut is still better than 90% of other directors' best stuff.

Dull, but not worthless

I wish they had saved the German version of this one, but alas, only the AIP version seems to turn up, though most versions are barely longer than the one USA network ran in their infancy. What was once given an "X" rating, barely rises above PG-13 standards for this new millennium. Dullea, fresh from "2001", is out of place amidst the tame exploitation, but gives it a good try. John Huston, in the midst of a long string of aging weirdo roles, steals the show easily. The script by Richard Matheson, is well done, but manhandled by the multiple directors different approaches, and the different exploitation requirements of the various producers. It easily extends the normal AIP formula, but falls short of it's goal to cross into more "Adult" film-making. Not worthless, but not all that thrilling, with much "dead Air"

Having discovered that she is pregnant, Natalie Ravenna (Shirley Knight), a Long Island housewife panics and leaves home to see if she might just possibly have made something different out of herself; if she can manage to unshackle her grocery list worth of responsibilities that add up to a life with a husband she loves. In a motel room where Natalie stops to rest during the day, she sits motionless on the bed, and experiences the exuberance of complete freedom and the queasy feelings of new beginnings. Natalie continues on with her journey and picks up a young hitch-hiker -Killer (James Caan), an attractive brain-damaged football player. It is through Killer that poses a more disturbing question to Natalie than that of domestic responsibility. How deeply are we wedded to chance meetings and are we responsible for the crimes that we witness?

Shirley Knight is Wonderful

Shirley Knight plays Sara Ravenna, a Long Island housewife who runs away from her marriage when she discovers she is pregnant. She plans to drive into America's heartland and start anew. Along the way she picks up a friendly hitchhiker (James Caan) who calls himself 'Killer.' Soon she discovers that the good natured 'Killer' is actually brain damaged, and by picking him up she has unknowingly taken on a huge responsibility. The two of them drive all the way to Nebraska, where Sara gets Killer a job helping out at a roadside reptile farm. It is here that Sara meets Gordon, a local cop, and soon things go horribly wrong for everyone.

This is a powerful drama about people disconnected from society, alienated by the choices they make or by the limits imposed on them by others. Even with such a low budget and a very freewheeling attitude, the film is able to capture everything that needs to be said through these clearly defined characters. Shirley Knight has a complex, diverging role and there are moments of some awe-inspiring acting by her. One of my favorites is when she is on the telephone calling her home to her worried husband the first time. It is such a tense scene on both ends, and in every small gesture and inflection of a word, so much about her is spoken with so little. Then comes in the character of 'Killer' played by James Caan. This character is unlike any I've ever seen him play, and he performs wonderfully. It's one of his best performances as he is very restrained and moving.

The way Coppola develops the characters by using short, dream-like flashbacks is very clever, adding a fragmented kind of view onto it all. The quick flashbacks that are graphic and self-contained contrast well with the longer shots in some crucial scenes. Also, because this film was shot on location all over the Eastern U.S., it offers an interesting, authentic look at America in the late 1960's.

I haven't seen many other films starring Ms. Knight, I'm only familiar with her more recent work on television, usually playing a nagging mother in law or a dotty old woman. It was great seeing her so young, beautiful, and so wonderfully subtle in this movie. It's also kind of a shame that James Caan went on to be typecast as the 'tough guy' for the rest of his career, because this film evidenced that he is capable of so much more than that.
