Please don't treat this like a theatrical presentation, because it isn't one

This film is part of someone's personal devotion. I would hope that, however weird or twisted some may consider that devotion to be, any viewing or commenting on this entry would at least accord it the respect that they would hope would be accorded to their own personal devotion, religious or otherwise. It is disrespectful and irrelevant to treat it in the same fashion in which you would treat a film that was intended as a salable entertainment experience for public consumption. It was never intended as a commercial product, or an entertainment experience, or anything remotely similar thereunto. If treating that which is important to others in this sort of mischaracterized and derogatory fashion cannot be avoided, please have the common courtesy not to do so in a public setting. No one who has seen this in the setting in which it was designed to be viewed, or is involved with what it represents, is interested in outside commentary on it.

Watch Ingrid Bergman do 'the dentist'!

Many farcical comedies of the 60's and 70's haven't stood the test of time. Cactus Flowers is one of the few that has.

It's quick, witty, well paced, clever and most importantly funny.

It's worth watching the film for the dancing scene alone: Seeing Ingrid Bergman doing "the dentist" was hilarious.

She really shows she has a flair for comedy.

The entire cast is brilliant. Special mention goes to a very young Goldie Hawn who looks (and sounds) like a different person! This is a classic. Highly recommended

They leave no stone unturned as sporting events, restaurants, art galleries, and traditional pheasant hunts turn into lurid displays of bad manners and profiteering. Things climax at the social event of the season, the inaugural voyage of the new pleasure cruiser The Magic Christian.

What's wrong with you people?

This is a fine, fine film!

I expected this film to have a much more sizeable cult following, considering it's really unlike almost any film ever made, and just about everyone you'd know from the British comedy scene at the time stars, and Sellers, Terry Southern (writer of "Dr Strangelove"), Graham Chapman and John Cleese wrote the script.

You might say "too many cooks...", but not a bit of it! It's hilarious from start to finish, and plays out like a surreal dream of one man alone. No over-written, soulless, think-tank comedy offering is this.

It works also as a social commentary, as Sellers' character Sir Guy Grand KG, KC, CBE sets out into polite upper-crust society with Ringo Starr, playing his newly adopted son and heir, Youngman Grand, Esq. (aren't you laughing already?) to prove that anyone will do anything for money. He achieves his aim, and unearths many more absurdities along the way.

Class, tradition, sport, authority and a whole plethora of everyday realities are all unmasked and shown to be meaningless facades when faced with the unexpected.

Having said this, it's the truly unexpected comedy moments that I love this film for, and the sense that anything is possible if the absurd reality we live in is.

I haven't even attempted an objective review of this film, but any comedy defies objective analysis to an extent. This one especially. I simply loved it.

An eighteen year-old girls wants to preserve her virginity, living in a family that manages the erotic arts.

Review :

Guess who will be sleeping with me tonight?

The movie tells us the story of a Herrenhaus (villa) in the beautiful countryside of Germany. For 500 years is has had a reputation: the nobility owning the house love sex. The two daughters show us the reputation is justified. But then the youngest daughter comes back from a two year period spent in a boarding school. And she turns out to be a virgin! This could seriously damage the reputation of the house and its family, so drastic measures are taken to end this dangerous situation. Luckily the house is frequented by a teacher of the violin and a student of art history. And then there is the chauffeur...

This is one of the many sex comedies made in Germany by the end of the 1960's up to the beginning of the 1980's. These comedies are all rooted in the German Heimat-genre. This one is quite early, which means a lot of nude German Dirndles, but no real sex scenes, not even simulated ones. The jokes are all outdated now, for during the time this movie was produced the Europeans were dealing with the dark age of the 1950's. Most jokes refer to this period and many are not funny at all these days. A butler, Herr Martin, is thrown in to deliver commentary and one liners, but alas, Martin Jenke is not a great actor and most of his commentary is quite lame. And to top of all the fun your classical homosexual is thrown in as well, who passionately loves the girls. Luckily this movie has Ingrid Steeger, one of the most beautiful Dirndles, to spice things up a bit.

Actually there isn't much of a story. And what story there is, is only used to make us laugh or show us naked girls. The pace is quite slow and the music is... dreadful. The song used for the opening title, which translates as "Guess who will be sleeping with me tonight?" (also the title of this movie) runs for almost five minutes during the opening titles. Tedious. It is frequently used again during the film, but in an instrumental version. The song itself is typical of 1969 in Germany: the text is quite risqué, but the music itself clearly points back to the 1950's or so.

The acting is above the genre's average. And so is the direction. Downsides are the slow pace and the many outdated jokes. If you like the German Lederhose movies, or enjoyed the Report movies, you might try this one. Most others I would advice to watch a more recent comedy of this type. You probably will have more laughs out of those than you will have out of this farce. For me a 4 out of 10.

Watch this movie!

This is an excellent version of the Bard's great tragedy, and it certainly deserves a lot more than 21 votes and one user review! I like this version more than the 1948 film starring Laurence Olivier, (which was a disappointment for me) but less than the 1996 "unabridged" version starring Kenneth Branagh. Being a Shakespeare buff, I have to like Branagh's excellent film more than this one because it contains the entire play. On the other hand, even though Branagh does a really good job of portraying the "Prince of Denmark" I do like Nichol Williamson's performance even more. I highly recommend this version to all fans of Shakespeare, Williamson, and great movies in general.

An odd bird

This is a rather odd movie, appearing after the JD/reform school movies of the late 50's and early 60's, but before the sleazy WIP films of the 1970's. It's also British, so all bets are off. The British are famous for being the most repressed and prudish of the European countries, but they also might be the most perverted. This film is fairly tame. It is less enjoyably trashy than similar films like "Baby Love" with Linda Hayden, the early Pete Walker effort "School for Sex", or the more violent "In the Devil's Garden", and it is definitely much less sleazy than Italian co-productions like "What Have You Done to Solange?" Still the film does contain flashes of full-frontal nudity and a completely gratuitous scene where the heroine (who looks to be about twenty five)dresses up in her school girl uniform even though she's not going to school (one for the perverts, I guess).

The protagonist is mentally unbalanced due to the bizarre merry-go-round related death of her father and she has some strange fear and fascination with horses. She's sent to the reformatory/mental institution because she stabs her mother's loutish boyfriend after he tries to rape her. This seems like a perfectly normal reaction to me, but the school psychiatrist insists on delving into her troubled psyche to get at the root of her neurosis, thus there's a lot of Freudian psychobabble (the filmmakers had obviously seen "Marnie" a few too many times). The other girls at the institution seem somewhat less than troubled as well. It's intimated that one was a prostitute, one simply won't take a shower, and couple others are lesbians. There's a few fights, some tame sapphic foreplay, and a lot gratuitous dancing in towels and teddies, but anybody expecting a sleazy WIP film is going to be bitterly disappointed. The only recognizable star is Lesley-Ann Down but she's not prominently featured and doesn't participate in any of the lesbian or nude scenes as she really was a teenager at the time. I recommend this film, but more as a curiosity than for any sordid subject matter it may contain.

a touching and simple story.

An old farmhand wants to save his old horse from being gored in the bull ring. He leaves everything to lead Ulysse, the horse, to the safety and freedom of the Camargue National Park. Beautiful images, excellent acting, with a little bit of comedy thrown in and music by the great Georges Brassens.
